FCCLA

Hey Silver Wolves!

Do you want to be part of a club with super fun activities and tons of fun people?  Then join FCCLA!  We are a Family and Consumer Science (FACS) based organization that gives members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life.  Here is some information about our upcoming FCCLA activities and things that have been going on in FCCLA at Riverton High.

            In October our activity focused on the National Program Student Body. Student Body is all about teaching members the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how to achieve it. For our Chapter activity we created a number of mini stations with activities that promoted a healthy lifestyle. The activities included hopscotch, four square, and Just Dance. Following the activity we provided healthy snacks like chips and salsa, as well as fresh vegetables and a delicious dip.

We also went to Cornbelly's for a Region Activity. Cornbelly's was a fun and exciting opportunity for our members to meet and make new friends from schools within our region which include Bingham, Copper Hills, Grantsville, Herriman and other high schools.  

Every year, as a Chapter we participate in the Festival of Trees.  Last years instead of making and donating a tree we made stuffed felt and fabric monsters dolls for children. These monster dolls are adorable and teach members valuable skills that they can use to be future homes which is one of our goals in FCCLA. We will be holding two activities in November for members to work on and complete monsters and other projects to donate. Once completed, our chapter will take a fieldtrip to Festival of Trees. Be sure to listen to announcements and look for posters in the halls for more details.

Just a reminder to students that are interesting in joining FCCLA.  We are still currently accepting applications!  It’s not too late to join in the fun.  You can pick a form up from any of the FACS teacher. Make sure you pay the $20 fee in the main office and return the receipt application to Mrs. Giron in room #1520.

Upcoming activities for the ART DEPARTMENT

•  Those students interested in attending the SLCC 2015 High School Workshop Day on November 13th need  to get the information from their teachers. Classes fill up fast. 
•  Also ART STOCK is coming up on November 10th at Jordan High School. Art Stock is an incredibly fun experience. All schools from Jordan and Canyons meet for a day of food, prizes and creating art. 
•  Portfolio day is coming up for art students who want to interview with colleges.  Portfolio Day will be on Saturday November 14^th and High School Seniors can start making appointments now!   All the information you need is on their website: http://smofa.org/museum.html?content_id=252. Students need to register with the Springville Art Museum for times.

Drama News!

Congratulations to the students that made the RHS Improv Team (Alexa Ballard, Captain).  We will be preparing for a fun Improv Show (with the Off-Broadway Theatre troupe) in December for Silver Rush.  Come see these funny people.

The Riverton High School Drama Dept. is already off and running with 3 major auditions behind us.  

The RHS Performing Arts Dept. is proud to present, Disney's Mary Poppins Nov. 19, 20, 21 and 23rd at 7:00pm.  There will be a special Saturday, Nov. 21st matinee at 2:00 p.m. (with a special Spoonful of Sugar Tea Party with Bert and Mary preceding that matinee).  Tickets will go on sale in the Main Office Oct. 12th.  RHS students have a special Student Appreciation night on Thursday, Nov. 19th where they will get a $1.00 off their ticket with their RHS ID.  Get tickets for the whole family before they fly away...

Student Spotlights

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS

 

     Grace Driggs is a senior at Riverton High School who maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She is the oldest of six children and loves spending time with her family.  She has taken mostly college level classes here at Riverton High. She is enrolled in three Advanced Placement courses this year and has taken and passed five AP classes with high scores in the past.  Grace is the current secretary of the National Honor Society and has earned her academic letter.  She has many talents among them being really good at math. She has used that talent to create a fairly lucrative job of tutoring kids after school.  She loves all sports although she is not involved in any particular sports team. She loves to run and play tennis.

     Grace is very outgoing and friendly.  She was voted 1^st attendant at Homecoming this year.  She loves helping people and tries to give service whenever she can.  She is a peer tutor in the special education department.  A perfect day for Grace would be watching the movie “Megamind” and eating corn. She can beat almost anyone on the “name that line in a movie game", especially Disney.  She has plans on serving and LDS mission and attending college to pursue a master’s degree in math or science.             

Howard Scott Jacobson III is his full name but everybody calls him Trace.  Trace is a senior at Riverton High School who maintains a 4.0 grade point average. He scored 33 out of 36 on his ACT.  Trace likes to challenge himself in school. A majority of his classes are honors or college level classes. He has received two academic letter awards. Trace has been very involved in sports at Riverton High. He has lettered in track and basketball and has played on the golf and baseball teams for two years.  He is planning on continuing to play basketball for Riverton in his senior year. In addition to all his participation in sports, he is a member of Health Occupations Club and the National Honor Society.  He has received his   Eagle Scout award and has volunteered for the Make A Wish foundation. He plans on serving an LDS mission and attending the University of Utah to major in Biology and eventually become an Orthopedic Surgeon.  His goal is to have a great family and a wonderful career.

2^nd Quarter DRIVER EDUCATION students (& parents)

It is time for you to get your Learner Permit if you have not already done so. You need to obtain your permit from the Utah Driver License Division BEFORE the quarter begins (driverlicense.utah.gov). You must score a minimum of 80% on the Utah Driver Handbook examination to apply for a Utah learner permit. Coach Galley has Utah Driver Handbooks available free of charge in his classroom and he also offers the test free of charge in Room 2626 before school (Mondays & Tuesdays) at 7:00 a.m. You may also go directly to the D.L. D. to take the test. If you do not plan on getting a learner permit, please see your counselor to transfer out of 2nd quarter Dr. Ed. Thanks!

ZERO FATALITIES Parent Nights

Our popular Dr. Ed. Parent Nights are scheduled in the auditorium each quarter for the parent(s) of current Dr. Ed. students. We encourage you to plan ahead and save the date. Please note that the general public and family members or friends are invited to join us at this powerful presentation. The Zero Fatalities Parent Night is informative and life changing.

PSAT

Juniors, the PSAT will be given the morning of October 14, 2015.  There is limited space so it will be first come first serve. The cost is $17.00.  Remember this is the only way to receive National Merit Scholarship money plus it is excellent practice for the ACT that you will be taking in the Spring.

Students that earned Enhanced Diploma Awards in all 5 areas!

Earning an Enhanced Diploma is an achievement for which any student can be proud.  Enhanced diplomas are earned in five different areas: Academic, Service, Departmental, Activity, and Attendance. Each area requires consistent effort and dedication for a period of three years.  The following students have earned Enhanced Diploma awards in not just one area but all five areas.

Jack Markham  (spotlighted in the February Howler) possibly playing professional baseball and getting a degree to become a Psychologist.

Jeff Arens maintains a 3.8 GPA and has been on the honor roll every quarter in high school.  He earned the Academic Enhancement diploma by successfully completing numerous rigorous courses in core subject areas such as AP Calculus and AP Language and Composition.  Evidence of effective time management for Jeff is his ability to juggle academic work with extracurricular activities.  Jeff is a two sport athlete.  He has been on the basketball and baseball teams at Riverton High and has lettered in these sports.  He enjoys playing guitar and piano and serving others.  His future plans include going on a mission for the LDS church, attending Utah Valley University on a baseball scholarship,

Sierra Spencer is a 4.0 GPA student.  She has completed fourteen honors and advanced placement classes here at Riverton High.  She has received a scholarship to BYU and is exploring careers in math or science. Sierra has been involved in the Interact Club, Red Cross Club, National Honor Society, MESA Club, Spanish Club, and the Science Olympiad. She is the vice-president of the Science Olympiad.  She won first place in the state MESA competition where she earned a gold medal.  She has been involved in service through herchurch and community by serving in the Soup Kitchen and Make-a-Wish Foundation.  Her hobbies include playing the piano, reading, water and snow skiing.

Caitlin Stock has been involved in many activities at Riverton High and has been highly successful both academically and socially.  She maintains a 3.9 GPA while being enrolled in mostly honors and advanced placement courses.  She has been on the honor roll every quarter of high school, has received an academic letter and was named the ELKS Foundation most valuable student.  She is a member of National Honor Society, and several other clubs: Symphonic Orchestra, Bell Choir, Red Cross Club, and FCCLA.  She has served as a chapter and state officer for the FCCLA.   She plays piano and harp and says “she loves to go on adventures with her friends.”  She has served church and community in many ways. She is part of the No Kid Hungry hunger relief program and Lead 2 Feed disaster relief program. She has been award a full-tuition Leadership Scholarship to Salt Lake Community College where she will finish her general education requirements then she will transfer to the University of Utah to major in Political Science.  Her goal is to be a Foreign Service Officer.  She loves to travel and plans on participating in a study-abroad program in Israel.

Auto Skills Contest

Congratulations to Wade M. Tate and Cason Q. Hales who won the Utah Ford/AAA Auto Skills Contest.  These two students, along with their instructor Jay Hales will travel to Dearborn, Michigan for the national contest in June. They will represent Utah and compete against teams from all 50 states.  Way to go!

Jordan School District MESA Award Recipients

The following students were honored at the MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) Awards Banquet held on April 29, 2015.  Congratulations to these 3 students!

Sierra Spencer - Outstanding Math

Sierra is highly motivated, mature, independent, has enthusiasm and possesses leadership skills.  She is a 4.0 student and has taken a very rigorous schedule including several AP, and Honors classes.  She is ranked #1 of 648 students.

Sierra is interested in careers in math or science.  She plans to complete a Bachelors degree and possibly a Master's degree.

She likes to play the piano, read and water & snow ski.

She enjoys participating with Science Olympiad, MESA, NHS, Red Cross, and Interact.  She is a math scholar and has earned medals in Science Olympiad.

Sierra will be successful because of her zest for life.

Rebecka Olivares - Outstanding Science

Driven is the best word to describe Rebecka.  She is driven toward becoming a Biochemical Engineer and is working toward that goal.  

Education to Rebecka is more than just grades.  She has completed a rigorous schedule while attending RHS, consisting of 9 honors classes, 5 AP classes and 4 concurrent college classes.  She is currently enrolled in the biotech program at the JATC.

Rebecka loves to play soccer and has been a member of the RHS Girls Soccer team.  She also loves to serve and has spent several hours donating her time at Christmas, going to the food bank and was involved in the school's annual charity drive.  Rebecka was granted a MESA Scholarship but was unable to accept because she will be attending school in Colorado. 

Keegan Pitchford - Overall Oustanding

Keegan is very mature for his age and has a lot of inner strength and determination.  He also possesses great people skills.  Keegan is a very kind and caring person.  

Keegan is a 4.0 student and has taken a very rigorous schedule including several AP, Honors and Concurrent college level classes.  He is ranked 1 out of 648 students and scored a 33 on the ACT.

Keegan would like to become a Nero-Scientist, focusing on research and cures for neurological diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease.  His goal is to obtain a masters degree in Nero Science.

Keegan is the president of Science Olympiad, and is a member of MESA.  He also is part of the NHS and has served as a Senior Patrol Leader with the Boy Scouts.  He has placed in several state level competitions for MESA and in Technology.

Keegan has been involved with many community and scouting activities.  He is also participating in an internship with InnovaBio.  I fully expect Keegan to find the cure for Alzheimer's!

FFA Winners!

FFA State Contests took place during the end of April.  Students did exceptionally well at them!! Here are the results of their efforts:

Ag Issues: 1st place and a gold ranking.  This team will be representing Utah at the National FFA Convention in Louisville Kentucky. Team includes: Justin Mckenzie, Danika Nageli, Jossie Workman, Adriana Thacker, Kayla Turner and Brooke Hardy.

Ag Communications: 3rd place and Gold ranking.

Team includes Shaylyn Knappenberger, Kaitlyn Knappenberger and Kim McClellan.

ART DEPARTMENT

  

     We want to congratulate Kasey Tolley for his entry into the 2015 Junior Duck Stamp Contest. We will find out his placement in the competition on May 9th at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Brigham City. Well done Kasey!!!  He spent many, many hours on his painting so be sure to give him a "good job" comment when you see him.

    Also on April 17th the District Art Show goes up at South Towne Mall. Be sure to check out the talented students in our Art Department. It will be up for 2 weeks. 

     Riverton High had 6 art entries make it into the Springville Art Museum. We doubled our entries from last year. It may not seem huge, however it is. It is a juried show and only a few select make it into the museum. Our students' who were juried in were: Annalena Schmider, both her submissions made it into the show! Her pieces were a small prisma (colored pencil) of a leaf and a beautiful charcoal self portrait.  Karlie Curtis had an oil painting of herself, Rebecca Pederson had an oil painting of her friend, and our SBO Kirsten Spencer had a prisma drawing of a wooden maniquine sitting by a fireplace, and Kimberly Dang had a photograph. Watch for them at the District show.

Watch for the annual Riverton Art Show sometime in the middle of May. If you want to submit for this show please see your art teacher. all entries are welcomed. 

     And last but not least our 3rd Annual "CHALK THE WALK" will coming near the end of may. Watch for the flyers.
