FCCLA NEWS

January and February have been really busy for RHS FCCLA.   FCCLA Region Conference was on February 4th.  Students have been working and preparing to compete in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition).  

The students represented RHS well and received the following recognition at Region:

February 8-12 was National FCCLA Week.  The RHS FCCLA officers planned activities for each day that included Plinko FCCLA Trivia, and “Lunch Art in the Commons”, RHS Chapter Lunch Bunch on Wednesday and TGI-FCCLA Friday (Thank Goodness It’s FCCLA Friday) Breakfast was Friday morning.

Students are now preparing for the FCCLA State Conference, which will be held on March 22nd, and 23rd at the Davis Convention Center.  Their STAR Events are very well done and we wish them the best of luck as they compete with students from all over the state.

Chapter activities will be on Thursday March 11th and April 14th.  Applications for RHS Chapter Officer will be available on April 1st from any FACS teacher.  The date in May for the closing social and induction of the new officers will be announced at a later date.

44th Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show

Our students are participating in the All-State School Art Show held at the Springville Art Museum. We were allowed 21 entries and we got in 6 artworks with three awards. The show starts Saturday, February 6, 2016 and ends Friday, March 25, 2016. The Museum is opened from 10:00 am and 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday. The Art Department will be taking a field trip on March 9^th from 9:00-1:00. We encourage our art students to go and enjoy the show. Also parents and community feel free to take your families to see the amazing work produced state wide.

We may have had a small number get into the show…however we still feel it an honor to be represented.

FCCLA

December was such a fun and exciting month for us. We have some fun things coming up these next few months so stay tuned!  Competitions are starting, so check with any FCCLA officer or FACS teacher to get help and ideas. These competitions look great on college applications and can count towards an enhanced diploma for the FACS department if you’re a senior.

In December we were very busy! We did a service activity and made stuffed monsters for The Festival of Trees. All proceeds were donated to Primary Children’s Hospital. Our members took a field trip to The Festival of Trees to check out all the trees and donations!  We also contributed to Silver Rush by selling Italian Sodas at lunch and they were a HIT!

FCCLA and SKILLS USA were in charge of this year's Boy’s Choice Dance, No Cash $mash! Thank you to all who helped with preparations and planning. We were so excited to see it all come together. The dance was Saturday, January 16 in the Big Gym.  The goal was to come dressed in whatever you want that doesn't cost a penny.   Prizes were awarded to the couples with the cheapest date ideas. It was a fun night for those who attended.

One of the greatest opportunities you have being an  FCCLA member are the competitions that are held.  STAR Events stand for Students Taking Action with Recognition.  In these events you compete as a team or individually in a specific category.  Groups of FCCLA students are working hard on their STAR Events in preparation for Region Convention - February 4th in Provo.

SILVER PUPS PRESCHOOL is now taking names for the 2016-17 school year.  We are enrolling 3 1/2 - 4 year old children in our program.  The curriculum will focus on all areas of child development and your child will get lots of individual attention from the high school students. For more information please e-mail:  camille.hicks@jordandistrict.org

Teacher Spotlights

Katie McBride

I was born and raised in South Jordan, Utah which is also where I currently reside. I graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in special education with a severe endorsement. I am currently in my 5th year of teaching. Previous to Riverton High School, I taught at Bacchus Elementary in Granite District for three years before moving to Kauri Sue Hamilton last year. I also love to coach and do so every chance I get. I currently coach a competitive softball team and have high school experience coaching basketball and softball. Some of my favorite hobbies include: bowling, playing softball, camping, fishing and spending time with my dog Manny. I also like long walks on the beach, skipping to work and jamming out to Bon Jovi in my classroom.

FCCLA

Hey Silver Wolves!

Do you want to be part of a club with super fun activities and tons of fun people?  Then join FCCLA!  We are a Family and Consumer Science (FACS) based organization that gives members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life.  Here is some information about our upcoming FCCLA activities and things that have been going on in FCCLA at Riverton High.

            In October our activity focused on the National Program Student Body. Student Body is all about teaching members the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how to achieve it. For our Chapter activity we created a number of mini stations with activities that promoted a healthy lifestyle. The activities included hopscotch, four square, and Just Dance. Following the activity we provided healthy snacks like chips and salsa, as well as fresh vegetables and a delicious dip.

We also went to Cornbelly's for a Region Activity. Cornbelly's was a fun and exciting opportunity for our members to meet and make new friends from schools within our region which include Bingham, Copper Hills, Grantsville, Herriman and other high schools.  

Every year, as a Chapter we participate in the Festival of Trees.  Last years instead of making and donating a tree we made stuffed felt and fabric monsters dolls for children. These monster dolls are adorable and teach members valuable skills that they can use to be future homes which is one of our goals in FCCLA. We will be holding two activities in November for members to work on and complete monsters and other projects to donate. Once completed, our chapter will take a fieldtrip to Festival of Trees. Be sure to listen to announcements and look for posters in the halls for more details.

Just a reminder to students that are interesting in joining FCCLA.  We are still currently accepting applications!  It’s not too late to join in the fun.  You can pick a form up from any of the FACS teacher. Make sure you pay the $20 fee in the main office and return the receipt application to Mrs. Giron in room #1520.

Upcoming activities for the ART DEPARTMENT

•  Those students interested in attending the SLCC 2015 High School Workshop Day on November 13th need  to get the information from their teachers. Classes fill up fast. 
•  Also ART STOCK is coming up on November 10th at Jordan High School. Art Stock is an incredibly fun experience. All schools from Jordan and Canyons meet for a day of food, prizes and creating art. 
•  Portfolio day is coming up for art students who want to interview with colleges.  Portfolio Day will be on Saturday November 14^th and High School Seniors can start making appointments now!   All the information you need is on their website: http://smofa.org/museum.html?content_id=252. Students need to register with the Springville Art Museum for times.

**PTSA Student Club meets the first Monday of each month in the South classroom inside the library at 2:35. Drama News!

Congratulations to the students that made the RHS Improv Team (Alexa Ballard, Captain).  We will be preparing for a fun Improv Show (with the Off-Broadway Theatre troupe) in December for Silver Rush.  Come see these funny people.

The Riverton High School Drama Dept. is already off and running with 3 major auditions behind us.  

The RHS Performing Arts Dept. is proud to present, Disney's Mary Poppins Nov. 19, 20, 21 and 23rd at 7:00pm.  There will be a special Saturday, Nov. 21st matinee at 2:00 p.m. (with a special Spoonful of Sugar Tea Party with Bert and Mary preceding that matinee).  Tickets will go on sale in the Main Office Oct. 12th.  RHS students have a special Student Appreciation night on Thursday, Nov. 19th where they will get a $1.00 off their ticket with their RHS ID.  Get tickets for the whole family before they fly away...
